Classwide math intervention helps students build skills, and it also shows schools which students are truly at risk. Dr. VanDerHeyden explains a finding from her recent data, which held up in both Pennsylvania and Arizona: the better classwide intervention is implemented, the more accurate those at-risk decisions become. That’s why schools need to reach a midyear threshold of skill mastery before deciding who needs more support. Teachers sometimes get impatient and want to make recommendations after four weeks. Her answer is that the time isn’t wasted. Classwide intervention is already helping students, and it’s narrowing down who really needs intensive intervention.
