The Science of Learning: Why Teachers Are Key

The most exciting news is that conditions like learning disabilities can often be prevented through early detection and targeted, intensified instruction.

However, a major concern remains: many teachers are not equipped with the specific, incremental techniques needed to truly engineer learning. They may rely on general theories, programs, or curricula that lack a solid scientific foundation and may not be aligned with the actual needs of students.

Why Tools Are Not Enough

While these tools can be helpful, studies show that digital learning programs alone have minimal impact on student achievement. These programs are popular because they can seem easy to implement—just deliver the content and call it “successful.” But instruction is only successful when it leads to student learning, and that process is complex and dynamic.

The teacher is the active agent in the classroom. They must:

  • Select the right technique in real-time, based on a student’s evolving needs.
  • Orchestrate the dosage of instruction (frequency, intensity, and quality).
  • Adjust their approach instantly to address unexpected opportunities or barriers.

Decades of research confirm the profound influence of the teacher on student performance. This is why our most important work isn’t just to find effective techniques, but to equip every teacher with the skills to deliver them. The science of learning is ultimately about teacher behavior change—it’s our greatest challenge and our most promising opportunity.
